Short answer
The closest like-for-like Pentera alternative is Horizon3.ai NodeZero. Both are automated pentesting tools your own team runs against internal networks, Active Directory, external assets and cloud. NodeZero publishes per-asset prices; Pentera does not. If what you need is a check of your detection stack, or a pentest report from an independent provider, a different kind of product fits better.

What Pentera does well
Pentera covers a wide stretch of the attack surface in one product family. Pentera Core tests the internal network from an assumed-breach position without prior credentials. Pentera Surface tests the external attack surface. Pentera Cloud covers cloud and hybrid environments, and a dedicated web application module tests access control, IDOR, injection and SSRF behind SSO, MFA and OAuth.
Its credential work is a common reason teams buy it: Pentera cracks Active Directory password hashes offline to show which accounts an attacker could take over. Tests run on demand, as often as you like, and Pentera says the platform has been proven across more than 1,300 customer environments over ten years. Teams that would rather not operate it can use SECTOR11, Pentera's managed testing service.
Three different questions, three kinds of tool
“Pentera alternative” covers products that answer different questions. Start from the question.
| Your question | Kind of tool | Examples | Who runs it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Could an attacker who gets in reach our crown jewels? | Automated pentesting platform | Pentera, Horizon3.ai NodeZero | Your security team, on its own schedule |
| Would our controls block or detect this technique? | Breach and attack simulation | Picus, Cymulate | Your security or detection engineering team |
| Can we hand an auditor or customer an independent pentest report? | Pentest provider or PTaaS | Helix Cyber, NetSPI, Cobalt | The provider, with your scope and authorization |
Pentera vs Horizon3.ai NodeZero
These two are the closest substitutes. The main differences on their own pages are pricing transparency and deployment detail.
| Pentera | Horizon3.ai NodeZero | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Internal network and AD (Core), external surface (Surface), cloud, web apps and APIs | Internal, external, AWS and Azure, Kubernetes, AD password audits, phishing impact; web apps as a separate product |
| Deployment | Not described on the pages we read | Internal tests from a Docker host or OVA you set up; external tests run from Horizon3's cloud |
| Pricing | Not published | From $15 per asset per test (Flex) or $50 per asset per year with unlimited tests (Core) |
| Managed option | SECTOR11 managed testing | Not described on the pages we read |
| Government | Supports FedRAMP pentest guidance; states it does not claim FedRAMP authorization | NodeZero Federal is FedRAMP High Authorized, per Horizon3 |
Pentera vs Helix Cyber
Pentera and Helix Cyber overlap less than the word “automated” suggests. Pentera is software your team operates. Helix Cyber is a service: you order a test in the portal, sign the rules of engagement, and AI agents run it while people oversee them. A second agent reproduces each finding before it goes into the report.
Keep Pentera, or pick NodeZero, if
- You want to test internal networks and Active Directory every week, not once a year.
- Your team has the time to schedule runs and work the results.
- You need to show how an attacker moves from one foothold to domain admin.
Add Helix Cyber if
- An auditor, customer or board wants a pentest report from an outside party.
- The target is a web app, API, external or internal network, or a cloud account, tested to an agreed scope.
- You want a fixed price ($3,000 black box, $4,000 gray box per app) and free retests as fixes ship.
Many teams use both kinds: a self-run tool between engagements, and an independent test once or twice a year. Our continuous penetration testing page explains how the two fit together.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Pentera?
For the same job, an automated pentest your own team runs across internal networks, Active Directory, external assets and cloud, Horizon3.ai NodeZero is the closest match and publishes per-asset prices. If you need to test whether your security controls detect attacks, look at Picus or Cymulate. If you need an independent pentest report for an auditor or customer, use a provider such as Helix Cyber, NetSPI or Cobalt.
How much does Pentera cost?
Pentera does not publish prices. Its pages route buyers to a conversation with its team. For comparison, Horizon3.ai lists NodeZero Core at $50 per asset per year with unlimited testing, and Flex at $15 per asset per test.
Is Pentera breach and attack simulation?
Pentera describes itself as automated security validation. It runs real attack techniques safely against your environment, such as assumed-breach tests and offline cracking of Active Directory password hashes. Breach and attack simulation tools such as Picus and Cymulate focus on whether your EDR, SIEM, firewall and other controls block and detect simulated attacks.
Can an automated pentesting tool replace a third-party pentest for compliance?
Not always. Pentera states that it does not certify compliance. Many auditors and enterprise customers ask for a test by an independent party, and PCI DSS sets requirements for tester qualification and independence. Running your own tool is useful between tests; check with your auditor before relying on it as the annual test.
Does Helix Cyber replace Pentera?
Only for some of the work. Helix Cyber runs scoped penetration tests of web apps, APIs, networks and cloud accounts and delivers a report about 24 hours after scope is confirmed. It is not software your team runs continuously against Active Directory. If that is the job, NodeZero is the closer alternative.
