Tangerine data breach: 243K accounts exposed
Severity: high · Patch status: no-fix-needed · Since 2024-02-28
In February 2024, the Australian Telco Tangerine suffered a data breach that exposed over 200k customer records. Attributed to a legacy customer database, the data included physical and email addresses, names, phone numbers and dates of birth. Whilst the Tangerine login process involves sending a one-time password after entering an email address and phone number, it previously used a traditional password which was also exposed as a bcrypt hash. Exposed data: dates of birth, email addresses, names, passwords, phone numbers, physical addresses, salutations. The breach dates from Feb 18, 2024; Have I Been Pwned loaded it on Feb 28, 2024.
What to do
- If you had a Tangerine account, change its password and the password of any other account that reused it.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever it is offered.
- Check whether your addresses are in this breach at https://haveibeenpwned.com.
- Expect targeted phishing that quotes the leaked details; verify any unexpected contact out of band.
