PHPUnit Command Injection Vulnerability (CVE-2017-9841)
Severity: critical · Patch status: patched · Since 2022-02-15 · CVE-2017-9841
PHPUnit allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via HTTP POST data beginning with a "<?php " substring, as demonstrated by an attack on a site with an exposed /vendor folder, i.e., external access to the /vendor/phpunit/phpunit/src/Util/PHP/eval-stdin.php URI. CISA added CVE-2017-9841 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on Feb 15, 2022, which means attackers are exploiting it in the wild.
What to do
- Apply updates per vendor instructions.
- US federal agencies must remediate by Aug 15, 2022 (BOD 22-01); treat that as the outer limit.
