Severity: critical · Patch status: no-fix-needed · Since 2019-02-21
In February 2018, the diet and exercise service MyFitnessPal suffered a data breach. The incident exposed 144 million unique email addresses alongside usernames, IP addresses and passwords stored as SHA-1 and bcrypt hashes (the former for earlier accounts, the latter for newer accounts). In 2019, the data appeared listed for sale on a dark web marketplace (along with several other large breaches) and subsequently began circulating more broadly. Exposed data: email addresses, ip addresses, passwords, usernames. The breach dates from Feb 1, 2018; Have I Been Pwned loaded it on Feb 21, 2019.
What to do
- If you had a MyFitnessPal account, change its password and the password of any other account that reused it.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever it is offered.
- Check whether your addresses are in this breach at https://haveibeenpwned.com.
- Expect targeted phishing that quotes the leaked details; verify any unexpected contact out of band.
