Ethereum data breach: 16K accounts exposed
Severity: high · Patch status: no-fix-needed · Since 2016-12-20
In December 2016, the forum for the public blockchain-based distributed computing platform Ethereum suffered a data breach. The database contained over 16k unique email addresses along with IP addresses, private forum messages and (mostly) bcrypt hashed passwords. Ethereum elected to self-submit the data to HIBP, providing the service with a list of email addresses impacted by the incident. Exposed data: email addresses, ip addresses, passwords, private messages, usernames, website activity. The breach dates from Dec 16, 2016; Have I Been Pwned loaded it on Dec 20, 2016.
What to do
- If you had a Ethereum account, change its password and the password of any other account that reused it.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever it is offered.
- Check whether your addresses are in this breach at https://haveibeenpwned.com.
- Expect targeted phishing that quotes the leaked details; verify any unexpected contact out of band.
