Cyberattack on Italy's Chamber of Deputies email accounts, including account assigned to PM Meloni
Severity: medium · Patch status: no-fix-needed · Since 2026-10-27
Italy's Chamber of Deputies confirmed a cyberattack targeting parliamentary email accounts, including one assigned to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (not her government account), former Justice undersecretary Andrea Delmastro, and lawmaker Paolo Formentini. Security measures were activated with the National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN). The Chamber said the incident had no emergency implications and noted intensified attacks on other Italian, European and international institutions, following an October 8 pro-Russian-linked DDoS attack on the Foreign Ministry. No technical details on access level or data exfiltration have been disclosed; the incident is viewed in the context of hybrid warfare risks, where compromised political correspondence could enable intelligence gathering, further intrusions, or influence campaigns. Investigation is ongoing.
What to do
- Review and reset credentials for affected and at-risk parliamentary accounts; enforce MFA
- Audit email access logs to determine whether accounts were accessed and data exfiltrated
- Harden email security (phishing-resistant authentication, monitoring for lateral movement and impersonation)
- Prepare transparent public communications distinguishing attempted vs confirmed compromise
- Increase monitoring amid elevated cyber pressure on Italian and European institutions
