Amtrak data breach: 2.1M accounts exposed
Severity: medium · Patch status: no-fix-needed · Since 2026-04-17
In April 2026, the hacking group ShinyHunters claimed they had breached Amtrak. The group typically compromises organisations' Salesforce instances before demanding a ransom and later, if not paid, dumping the data publicly. They subsequently published the alleged data which contained over 2M unique email addresses along with names, physical addresses and customer support records. Exposed data: email addresses, names, physical addresses, support tickets. The breach dates from Apr 3, 2026; Have I Been Pwned loaded it on Apr 17, 2026.
What to do
- If you had a Amtrak account, change its password and the password of any other account that reused it.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever it is offered.
- Check whether your addresses are in this breach at https://haveibeenpwned.com.
- Expect targeted phishing that quotes the leaked details; verify any unexpected contact out of band.
